Friday, October 10, 2008 @ 10:05pmTBTL is music loversTonight we all picked songs we're currently loving. The choices were: Luke: In Spite of Ourselves (John Prine and Iris DeMent) Sean: Do It Again (Steely Dan) Jen: Mercy Now (Mary Gauthier) Have a great weekend! -Jen Andrews Friday, October 10, 2008 @ 9:55pmIntroducing the 10 of the weekHey look! One of our 10's, Garret of Verve Wine Bar, got a rave in the Seattle Times: And this is certainly the right place for an impromptu visit over a cheese plate or dessert. But with chef Garrett Brown doing his one-man mojo in the kitchen, Verve helps cement the notion that Columbia City is a culinary hot spot. We already knew this, of course, because Chef Garrett and Sommelier Kate (Verve's owner) hosted our first book club and the food was amazing! Congrats Garret! We fired Joe and Sarah and hired Addie and Morgan. Friday, October 10, 2008 @ 1:12pmWhy Can't I Stop Watching This?I saw this on Videogum today. It's a video for the MGMT song "The Youth" made by Eric Wareheim of the "Tim and Eric Awesome Show" (the guys who bring you Dr. Steve Brule, and lots of other hilariously bizarre stuff). It's weirdly intense for a video featuring glammed-out kid standing on a giant lazy susan. If your are digging it, and want to watch the hi-resolution version, you can see it here -- Luke Burbank Friday, October 10, 2008 @ 12:51pmBest Roadtrip EVERCourtesy of buddy Seth (apparently the self-appointed chronicler of embarrassing videos I've been in), who also uploaded the tape of the high school opera I was in, comes another piece of video from my past. This is a beer commercial that me and The Mummy were in years and years ago. He's the tall guy, and I'm the one in the glasses, don't blink, or you'll miss me. Productions Notes: - We got the gig after The Mummy called me up one day at my work and said 'Dude! They're casting for a beer commercial! We have to go down there!'. I was on a lunch break so I said okay. - There were like hundreds of people trying out for this thing. It was amazing we got it because there were lots of models and attractive people with headshots... The casting people liked us because we rapped the entire Humpty Dance for them on the spot. - We actually drove from Oregon to Canada (not in that old Land Rover, that was just a prop they rolled off the truck for selected scenes) over the course of two weeks making this thing. - People who make beer commercials have to be super paranoid about giving the appearance of drinking and driving, which is why, after like a four hour conference call with New York, they had me and the mummy go outside and "unpack" the Land Rover on film. This was so that people knew we were staying over at the Abandoned Canadian Saloon and not trying to drive home (back to Seattle? Seems like a long way). - At that Abandoned Canadian Saloon, there were these three very old, very drunk oil field workers sitting there in the middle of the day. The producers recruited one of them to pretend to the be the bartender (it's when we eat some slimy eggs or something). I'm pretty sure, just being in the commercial that long entitled him to get paid as much as all the rest of us (which was kind of a lot of money) but he insisted that his pay come in the form of a free drink. He just kept saying 'are you gonna ring that bell?' Which meant everyone (him included) got a free drink. - Roadtrips are fun, especially when someone else is paying for them, and you're LITERALLY there to drink beer. -- Luke Burbank Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 8:28pmFHB...... Duff McKagan's Guide To the EconomySo Duff McKagan doesn't necessarily look like the financial guru shown earlier in the blog, but he has some fantastic words of wisdom to share regarding the economy in all its glory. Here's an excerpt from his article featured on SeattleWeekly.com
"'Family Hold Back' is a saying that comes from years of simply too many kids and not enough to feed us all of the time. One of us would almost always certainly have a friend over for dinner and this is when the secret code of 'FHB' started… make sure the guest had enough to eat, take a small portion, don't say anything." It's definately worth the read, if I do say so myself. If Duff McKagan can cut back on luxuries, so can I. -Intern Robin Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 6:58pmThursday: Picture of the Day
Is that Daniel Craig? Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 6:21pmA video with good music and mustachesLast week we were all delighting in this band Miniature Tigers and their song "Cannibal Queen". I think the video makes a complete picture of awesomeness complete with mustaches. Miniature Tigers - Cannibal Queen -Jen Andrews (thanks to Bruce for the introduction) Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 6:18pmThe DeTore Interviews: Volume OneThink back to TBTL Why it Matters: Garbage Pail Kids edition, you'll recall Sean is a big fan. Yesterday, Sean got a chance to ask Art Spiegelman, one of the creators, some questions about his favorite collector's items. Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 6:08pmDrum Majors on TBTLTonight at 7:30, the drum majors and vocalists from the High School Band competition will come on TBTL and vie for your votes. The balloting ends tomorrow at noon, so be sure to listen and make your voice heard. And (drumroll please), since he wrote the song, Ben Lee will personally announce the winning school tomorrow night on TBTL.
-Jen Andrews Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 6:02pmIs a rap battle brewing? On Friday night, we were pretty thrilled to have Rap Master Maurice live in studio "speaking truth to power" with his revenge raps.
Unfortunately, it turned a little ugly the next day. In a spontaneous decision, I had told one of our listeners that Luke and I would write and perform a rap for her sister who was going through a rough time. One thing led to another, Luke didn't think I should write the rap, I said I could, he said I could be in charge of the administrative duties, I called on the spirit of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes...pretty soon a rap-off was announced...anyway...I don't know what's going to happen, but you all had some thoughts. From Lauren (the listener who started this whole thing): I think the competition idea sounds fantastic, and Luke was being kind of a jerk about your rap writing skills. From Bruce: Let the tens judge the rap competition in an old school rap battle know as The Battle of Beastlake 2: Electric Boogaloo Geez. Now I'm getting nervous. -Jen Andrews Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 11:05amI Was Hoping Someone Would Do This.
Of the many media rituals that have sprung up around the market's daily crapping of itself, the one I find most annoying is probably "Sad Trader Photo". It's like the papers think the severity of losing 40% of our savings won't properly sink in unless we can also gaze upon a photo of a paunchy 49 year-old guy in a smock sitting at a computer that looks like it was stolen from the set of "War Games" crying softly to himself. Wait, you say you didn't understand just how Crunked we all are with the money and the not having any of it anymore? You need those photographic cues? Well you're in luck, because Gawker has put together a Tumblr page with The Best of Sad Guys On Trading Floors. Some of my favorites: (I also took the liberty of writing some captions. Maybe you guys would also like to do that in the comment section. Maybe that would be fun) I should not have refinanced my house in order to buy this jacket. Even though it totally kicks ass.
I CANNOT believe Kenley survived another week of Project Runway.
You know what? this finger is delicious! I don't need food! I'm rich! Rich I tell you! Finger fooooooooooooooooood!!!!!!!! (takes off pants).
It's okay Jeff. Everything's cool Jeff. You just wait here long enough, and then dad's going to show up, and we're going to go play catch. Keep it together Jeff. --Luke Burbank Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 11:01amGeorge Michael is perfect in my eyesThe New York Times has this fairly irritating article about this computer program that has a "beautification engine" which transforms someone's picture to show what they would look like if their features conformed to a specific idea of beauty. Check out Michael Cera's transition:
Isn't he more beautiful and interesting just the way he is?
I don't want to live in a "Gattica" world where everyone looks like Jude Law (or James Franco).
Thursday, October 9, 2008 @ 10:54amInspired by BobRecently Bob Dylan spoke about what has most inspired him. He specifically cited the Robert Burns Poem A Red Red Rose. I suppose that is interesting to me because I have been so inspired by Bob. (Interestingly, Abraham Lincoln was also inspired by Burns and often quoted him in speeches) There are so many Dylan lyrics that come to mind, unbidden, when I'm facing a challenge, a tough time, a romantic night, the war on the news...he has a little something for every occasion. So that's what inspires me. What inspires you?
'Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood His new album was just released to rave reviews. We'll try to play a bit of it tonight and look for more inspiration. And in the meantime, I think I'll read a bit of Robert Burns.
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 @ 6:38pmMore celebrity mustaches Luke can only hope to emulateThe mustache contest ends one week from tonight. I think half the allure of the bookclub this Sunday is seeing these staches up close and personal. Here's some more celebrity mustaches submitted by the 10's.
I sat across from Luke this morning and was amazed by how little hair is actually there.
Only in his dreams...(thanks to Jesh for the photoshopping) -Jen Andrews 1
