May 30th

Summer is nearly here, and we've been feeling it lately with all this sun! Tomatoes are in the ground, carrots have been seeded and the farmers are hauling their loot over the mountain from eastern washington to bring us seasonal goodies a bit earlier than we could ever grow on our own. Yeah for farmers markets (!) most of which opened this month. For a full schedule, make sure to check out these twosites.

On today's show, we're celebrating all that is local, kicking off with Teatro Zinzanni actor Joe De Paul who plays Ricky, the spoiled but big-hearted son of the owner of the tent. Teatro Zinzanni recently added brunch on the weekends and Ricky is set to tell us all about his breakfast shenanigans under the tent.

We are happy to welcome back Kelsey Kozak, formerly a teen cheesemaking sensation from Vashon Island and now a first term student at the Culinary Institute of America.

As always we'll have our weekly wine pairing with Michael Teer of Pike and Western Wine Shop, a Recipe of the Week, and What's Your Special? - followed by an hour long call-in Ask the Chefs. Thanks for listening this week, In the Kitchen with Tom & Thierry!

May 9th

Can you believe we are already in May? Seems like only yesterday we were mulling over tips for braising meats, and now spring has sprung and we have fresh clean food on the tips of our tongues.

This week on the show, Chef & Author Scott Uehlein chat with us about making "indulgently healthful" meals at home. His years in the spa kitchen at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona shine through in his new book Canyon Ranch: Nourish, a great one to add to the kitchen cookbook line up.

Tom and Thierry continue the 'fresh' theme with our ingredient spotlight on RHUBARB this week. Rhubarb is just up in the Pacific Northwest and a sure bet if you're looking to eat local. This vegetable (yes, it's a vegetable!) is often thought of for pies and tarts, but how about alongside pork or pate? Delicious.

In the last hour, chefs offer suggestions for Mothers Day this week and answer your calls for Ask The Chef, an open food forum from our kitchen to yours. We have our weekly wine pairing with Michael Teer of Pike and Western Wine Shop, Artichoke Fritters for Recipe of the Week, and What's Your Special?

Thank you for listening & we'll see you in the kitchen!

It's a great subject to listen in and learn from!

As always, our last hour, call in and join Tom and Thierry for Ask The Chef, an open food forum from our kitchen to yours. Vegetable Garden on the White House Lawn!

As many foodies and food activists have been hoping, a vegetable garden will soon be planted on the White House lawn, according to this article in the New York Times.

Michelle Obama herself will begin digging up a patch of the lawn on Friday to create the first vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden during World War II. Though some of the food from the garden will be used for the first family’s meals (no beets! The President doesn’t like ‘em) and for formal White House functions, it’s main purpose is to educate children in the importance of fresh, locally-grown foods– a major part of the First Lady’s agenda. Children from Bancroft Elementary school will be helping Michelle dig the garden on Friday. Most of the daily work will be done by the White House grounds crew and kitchen staff, but assistant chef Sam Kass (editor’s note: MY COUSIN!!!!), who used to cook healthy meals for the Obama family when they lived in Chicago, will have the job of overseeing the vegetable garden. More on Tom Douglas Restaurant's blog..........

Scallops & NYC

The show was late this week, due to a Mariners game, so it's only fitting the post comes up late this week, as well.

Snow in Seattle, once again! What better to do in this weather than tuck in with a home cooked meal. On this weeks show, Tom & Thierry chat scallops. A Vancouver BC company is farming west coast scallops now, and we're going to show you how to cook 'em. You can learn more about chefs & scallops from chef Sean Hartley on the Palace Kitchen Blog!

In the last hour, join Tom live from NYC for Ask The Chef, an open food forum from our kitchen to yours. As always, we'll have a wine pairing with Michael Teer of Pike and Western Wine Shop, Recipe of the Week, and What's Your Special? - this week with Chef Mark Fuller of Springhill Restaurant, Dahlia Lounge alum and new owner of this great West Seattle joint!
