Zaid Abdul-Aziz had a impressive career in basketball. He played for the Seattle SuperSonics as Don Smith in the mid-70's. Abdul-Aziz was also a three-time All-Big Eight player for Iowa State, averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds, and recently returned for a hall of fame induction ceremony. The 6'9" 295 pound cerebral athlete has turned his talent and determination to obtain a license as a chemical dependency counselor. Abdul-Aziz tells his inspiring story in his new book 'Darkness to Sunlight, The Life-Changing Journey of Zaid Abdul-Aziz (Don Smith)'.
The Matt Talbot Center is Bonneville Radio's Charity of the Month. The Center offers help to those with drug/alcohol addictions, including housing assistance and counselling. Minister/Director Greg Alex talks about the special challenges addicts face as well as programs the Center offers. The Flying Heritage Collection is Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's collection of rare World War II-era military aircraft that are in flying condition. One in 50 people has a lifetime risk of developing melanoma. Summer is the time for fun in the sun, but it is important to be aware of the danger of overexposure to UV rays. Randy Lomax is the Chairperson for the Melanoma Research Foundation. He is joined by John Dane III, Olympian on the U-S sailing team, and a spokesperson for the Foundation. First is Sally Jewell, President and CEO of REI, an international company that provides outdoor gear. Ms. Jewell is also the Chair of the Initiative for Global Development, an organization of business leaders committed to helping to reduce worldwide poverty. Next, Dave interviews former Ambassador Danilovich who is with the Millennium Challenge Corporation, established in 2004 and based on the principal that aid is most effective when it comes with good governance and economic freedom. Ambassador Danivolich travels to some of the poorest areas trying to help developing countries with assistance programs.
Finally, Dave speaks with the former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, who has been credited as the primary architect of Ireland's thriving economy. President Robinson works with luminaries like Bishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and Muhammed Yunus to foster understanding and positive growth around the world.
Samantha Metcalf is a junior at Raymond High School and joins Marion to talk about her role in S.A.D.D., Students Against Destructive Decisions.
