SXSW artist interview: These Arms Are Snakes

These Arms Are Snakes, the name immediately gets your attention and so does their sound, "We always describe it as obnoxious, that's basically what we say. So if someone's at a gas station and they're like, 'Hey man, you in a band?' We're like, 'Yeah.' They're like, 'What do you sound like?' We're like, 'Just obnoxious rock and roll basically,' says These Arms Are Snakes vocalist Steve Snere.
The Seattle based band are currently on tour, and come March 17th their GPS will direct them to Austin, for two shows at South by Southwest: SXSW.
This will be the band's third year appearing at the festival. "Last time we were there it was really fun because we played once and then the next day we had the day off to just kind of go meander and kind of be just a spectator of the whole thing." Snere said that isn't indicative of all the band's experiences at SXSW. "The time before that we played like three times in a matter of twenty-four hours, so it was pretty hectic."
This trip to SXSW Snere hopes for more of a balance. "This time I think it's going to fall somewhere in between, so I'm hoping for more fun than hectic, but I've got an idea it's probably going to be more hectic than anything."
The band has several appointments set, but Snere says he'll be taking full advantage of any down time. "We do have quite a few interviews, a radio show we're going to do, and two different shows. So in between that I definitely plan on hooking up with friends an trying to go catch different shows and stuff like that. I'm going to try to optimize the time as much as possible."
Snere's perspective on the festival, having attended in previous years, leaves him with experienced sound objectives. "Some of the bands that are there have a really warped perception of what's happening at SXSW, and I think that they think they're going to go there and they're gonna get signed, like this is the beginning of their musical career or something. And it's like, there's twenty-thousand bands here man, don't get your hopes too high. Those people get annoying because they think this is their big shot, when in general it's like, you should just drink as much free booze as you can and have fun with your friends."
That is the plan for Snere and fellow members of These Arms Are Snakes, "I'm looking forward to it, eating food and drinking and rockin' out, rock and roll, you know."
These Arms Are Snakes will be performing Wednesday, March 18 at Red Eyed Fly.
