Listen here to Jim Mora's press conference.
Mora provided injury updates on a few guys, with mostly good news.
The coach said a few players actually checked out in a little better shape than initially expected.
G Mansfield Wrotto left the game with an ankle injury, but Mora said today he should be fine. We'll see how much he practices on Wednesday when the team returns to the field.
CB Travis Fisher will also be able to go this week.
S C.J. Wallace has a strained hamstring and Mora says he could miss some time.
There is no update on T Brandon Frye. He left the game in the first half with a shoulder stinger. The medical staff is still doing tests.
DE Patrick Kerney is expected to practice this week and play on Sunday.
And LB Leroy Hill could return to practice for the first time since tearing his groin in the season opener. He will not return to action until after the bye week, but Mora says he could practice this week on a limited basis.
The team has lost DE Michael Bennett, who was released by the Hawks to make room for T Kyle Williams on the active roster. Bennett was claimed on waivers by Tampa Bay.
Oh yeah...Owen Schmitt did not need stitches after busting his head open while cracking his helmet against his skull during player introductions. Mora joked that Sunday he will want to introduce the defense, so Schmitt can't hurt himself.
More Praise For Matt
I'm diggin' the Clint Eastwood pic. It just emanates toughness.
That's the same thing Mora had to say about Matt Hasselbeck once again today.
"Courageous but not surprising," Mora said of Hasselbeck's 18 of 30, 241 yard passing, 4 touchdown performance yesterday.
"Sometimes with guys that are cerebral like Matt, you discount their toughness. Matt's a tough guy. Mentally tough and physically tough."
Mora said Hasselbeck was fine today, based on his limited interaction with the QB. Hasselbeck shouldn't be limited this week in practice. Mora officially termed his status for practice "as tolerated."
Mora pointed out what a boost it was for the Hawks to have #8 back yesterday; NFL teams were 2 and 11 coming into week 5 without their starting quarterbacks.
Dialing Things Down, Only Slightly
After the game against the Jaguars, Mora said he and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley slimmed down the defensive play calls. Going back to basics, and focusing more on fundamentals than scheme.
Mora clarified that today saying they didn't throw out the defensive game plan as much as they just went back to their "roots" on defense, utilizing more of the basics they worked on in training camp.
"It was a little stripped down. Not easier, but simple," Mora said. "Sometimes the best thing you can do is allow your players to play with great certainty, which means give them things they know inside and out and have practice over and over again. Then they play fast."
Mora said one benefit of doing so, was evident in the play of Aaron Curry. "He's very smart. But, the less you ask him to do mentally, the more it is going to accentuate his skill level."
