ON THE LINE with Robbie Tobeck

by Liz Mathews, 710 ESPN Seattle

From the Offensive Line to the Outdoor Line, Robbie Tobeck has been there. I wrangled some questions out of the Hawks Pro-Bowler. Spoiler alert! Hutch and SBXL are mentioned.

Liz: I found an old quote from your boy, Hass: "They're not even offensive lineman anymore. They're superstars, rock stars. Spoiled media darlings. They are so big-time, they probably get manicures." Take us back to the '05 season and the Fab Five. Just leave out the manicures and SBXL, it's still a little tender.

Rob: Hasselbeck was always a little jealous of the big guys up front. Most of the time the QB is the golden boy but on that team the OL finally got it's due. We had a great group of guys on that offensive line. One of the things that I think was key was our approach to things and our preparation each week. We were all very competitive guys and that competition to be the best amongst ourselves was very strong and in turn made us all better. We also had a fighters mentality. We were going to be tougher and go harder than anyone we played against. Lastly, we all got along really well, it was a good mix of guys.

Liz: When Hutch came on the show last week, you introduced him as "the one that left town and took the Seahawk running game with him." Ouch. Without drudging up ANOTHER sore subject, how do you think the O-line is shaping up this year? By the Jets game last December, injuries had ravaged the entire line and backups filled the field.

Rob: I didn't introduce him that way Tom did. I said "ouch" myself. I think the line should be pretty good this year barring injuries of course. Walter is still one of the best offensive lineman in the league and I like the way that Rob Sims has come back. He often gets forgotten about because he got hurt so early last year. The one positive of all of the injuries last year is that you were able to find out about a few of the younger guys. The key for this years group is that they are going to have to find that fire in their belly and play with the passion that it takes to stay at a high level.

Liz: OK, gotta ask. Hutch.

Rob: Perhaps the most competitive guy I know (other than myself of course). That is what makes him great and separates him from guys with similar skills.

Liz: Max Unger, Hawks second round pick out of Oregon. Currently listed as third C on the mini camp depth chart. Kid played 51 consecutive games - starting at LT and moving to Center - and was named first-team All-Pac-10 the past two years. Have you had a chance to check him out and get a feel for how he'll fit in with the other front men?

Rob: I haven't been able to get a look at him yet. The key to being a young lineman in the NFL is being able to play a few different positions. Eventually he will find a home whether it is guard or center. I am sure he will get plenty of reps at both this preseason.

Liz: Give us quick rundown on the Hawks in general for this year. What are your predictions as far as our schedule goes and who do you see as the toughest match ups?

Rob: I think the Hawks will be battling for the division crown this year. I think our wins fall anywhere from 7-10. It's tough to say. We are a better team just by getting our guys healthy. Add TJ at receiver (something that we have needed for years) and some new life on defense and who knows. It is going to be interesting to see how the team responds to the new coaching regime.
