Grocery bag fee critics gather thousands of signatures
KIRO Radio
Seattle's fee on grocery bags could be put on hold.
Less than one month after Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels signed an ordinance to put a 20-cent fee on grocery bags, The Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax has handed in more than 20,000 signatures to repeal the law.
The grocery sack fee is due to take effect in January, but the coalition's spokesman George Griffin said, "if we get enough signatures, the city will not be able to move forward until there's an actual election."
If the referendum is approved for the ballot, a citywide vote on the grocery bag fee would happen sometime next year.
Griffin said the amount of support for the petition is incredible. "The idea that there could be a partnership between the city and the retail community is something that we're hoping that the city goes to as an alternative."
