Sewage leak below Edgewater Hotel
It'll be at least three days before there's a permanent fix to a leaking sewer pipe below the Edgewater Hotel at Pier 67 on Elliott Bay.
The hotel's side sewer line ruptured after its mounting brackets broke, and the pipe pulled away from the pier.
Andy Ryan, with Seattle Public Utilities, says contractors for the hotel were working on a short-term fix Monay night. "The reason it's going to take until Friday is because the building is built out over the water. They're actually going to have to build scaffolding to get down underneath it."
Ryan says there's no major concern about the sewage. "It's not as much of a problem in a large body of water like that with tidal exchange like Puget Sound has." But he says the hotel has shut down its laundry. "Our main concern through all of this was the detergent that was getting into the bay from the hotels's laundry. Detergent is toxic to sea life."
Sewage has been spilling into the water since last Friday, but the severity of the spill has not been determined.
