Seattle gets a new park

A few hundred people gathered at South Lake Union today for the grand opening of the city's newest park.
It's hard to believe the area was drastically different. "Basically weeds and bare earth. It was not a very pleasant place," said John Nesholm, with the Seattle Parks Foundation.
He says, "Now we have grass, we have a rebuilt wharf, we have terraced steps down to the water so people can come and enjoy the water. We have planter boats, so people can come and really enjoy the water and get access to it."
The new park is a work in process and won't be completed for another two years. Nesholm says, "We will have a model boat pond, interactive fountains for the kids, and a grove of trees with picnic benches. It will be a wonderful place for families."
The project costs $20 million and marks the largest fundraising effort in history for the city's parks department.
