Economy not Slowing Seattle Cruise Industry
710 KIRO Reporter
Despite the rough economy, one industry expects to do more business in Seattle than ever before.
When "The Mercury" docked at Pier 66 on Tuesday, it was the first of many cruise ships expected in Seattle this season. The Port of Seattle says nine cruise ships will call Seattle their home port this summer, bringing 800,000 passengers to the city for voyages to Alaska and British Columbia.
Charla Skaggs with the Port of Seattle says people still see taking a cruise as a good value, and it's good for the city. Scaggs says each time a ship docks, it brings an estimated economic impact of $1.4 million to the Seattle.
It's certainly GREAT for waterfront businesses, like Pirate's Plunder. Manager Mark Ostler says "Cruise season is an incredible help to our business, it's an incredible boost."
