Opening Day of boating season Saturday
Saturday is the official opening day for boating season in Seattle.
Lake Washington and the Montlake Cut are expected to be packed with boaters eager to watch the Windermere Cup Opening Day Regatta and Boat Parade.
"On Saturday, we have a commissioning ceremony out here on the lawn where we bless the fleet, start the ceremonies, and then we watch the crew races. There are over 700 athletes in the crew races that range in age from high school all the way up to 65 years old," said Lynn Roth, an event organizer with the Seattle Yacht Club.
Boaters were allowed to begin lining up on the log boom Thursday afternoon and they must be in place by Saturday before 8am.
The Opening day Parade begins at noon in Portage Bay at the west end of the Montlake Cut and ends about 3pm at Webster Point. This year's theme is "Out of This World," leaving the door open for all types of music and decorations.
Registry to participate in the parade is over.
The Opening Day of boating season began on Seattle's waterfront in 1895 and moved to its current location with the completion of of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.
"Opening Day of boating season really is the oldest tradition at the Seattle Yacht Club," said event organizer John Brennes.
