A nurse from Renton, who volunteered to go to Haiti to help earthquake victims, has died.

Matt Bouthillier, 36, arrived in Port-au-Prince February 20 as part of the volunteer group from Portland-based Medical Teams International.

He suffered a fatal heart attack in Haiti on Monday.

"He was a tremendous hero. He needed to do this. He felt called to do this. I think he was led by his faith to do this. We're so grateful for his service and we mourn his loss," said Bas Vanderzalm, President of Medical Teams International.

Bouthillier, who was an emergency room nurse at Swedish Medical Center in Issaquah had a full cardiac work-up a year ago with no sign of any problems.

Bouthillier's wife believes it was the unsanitary conditions in Port-au-Prince that ultimately caused his heart attack.

Yes, Matt will go to heaven...IF he obeyed the scriptures. Believing only will not do it. Faith alone does not do it...there are things in the scriptures spelled out specifically that one must do in obedience to God's word which bring salvation. Not just going to Haiti to help out. Not trying to sound judgemental, just realistic.

your 'no one may come to the father except through me' type response IS judgmental. there are many paths to god, and not all good people tread the path youre apparently on.believe as you wish, your path to god is a moral one, but to call your opinion a 'reasonable' one is , i think, valid only in your eclestiatical peradyne

So do you actually do anything in your own life to help others?? I mean besides sitting in a church, dressed in your Sunday best, throwing change into the collection plate, which depending on your church may only go to the church it's self and not to help other people less fortunate than yourself. I get really sick of people like you that have to get on a pedastal and preach. Let's try this, instead of sitting in a church on Sunday in your finest clothes, praying to god, get off your high horsed behind and do something for the community...say like go to Swedish Medical Center and volunteer. Oh and by the way, just because you say your trying not to sound judgemental, you are being judgemental!!! I will add that I send my prayers to Matt's family. He will be greatly missed by those people that he helped in Haiti and in the Emergency Room at Swedish Hosptial!!

    'god's work'
there is no 'heaven' or 'hell' - it exists only in U'r mind. 'god's work'... LOL. and its 'god's plan' that took matt from 'god's work' and his friends and family... poor guy was just trying to help. god sux!

You wrote that ther is no heaven or hell, so when you say god sux are you talking about someone or somthing that doesnt exist, or does god live just outside of cleavland? lol

    sp5937 is completely wrong
I hate that this has turned into a religious discussion when a poor man has passed on, but I can't let what sp5937 said go unrefuted. There is no long list of "must do's" in the Bible for salvation. Faith IS all it takes for salvation. Jesus himself said so in John 3:11-21. Yes, there is more to being a Christian, but our salvation doesn't hinge on anything but our faith. If salvation depended on a long list of dos and don'ts, then what would be the point of Jesus dying for our sins? Of course, you are free also to not believe in God at all. I just wanted to set the record straight from a Christian perspective regarding what sp5937 said.

'god' as in their (religion's/religious types) god sux. Religious types that will say its god's will/plan... really? kill a good man for helping others. that's rational. sounds like god is a racist or hates blacks/hatians. (U'r) god SUX!

were not that far off. but when people say its gods will, or part of gods plan those are code words for we really dont know a darned thing. faith, i believe its called.

sp5937, this is an example of 'non judgmental'.
