In the wake of the tragic shooting of Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton, KIRO radio's Ron & Don will host "Arms Around Our Officers" this Thursday, November 5th from 3p-7p, at the base of the Seattle Space Needle.

Ron & Don are keeping us posted with photos from the event. View full photo gallery.

Arms Around Our Officers is an effort to bring the Puget Sound community together to honor this fallen officer who was fatally wounded Saturday night and his injured partner, Officer Britt Sweeney, as well as the hard work and dedication of all area police officers.

Ron and Don are asking listeners to visit the live broadcast of their show to donate to "The Brenton Family Assistance Fund" (set up through Bank of America) and write letters of appreciation to the Brenton family and Officer Sweeney.

Please listen to the audio file below for a special message from Ron and Don regarding "Arms Around Our Officers."

Come out and support our Police Officers. Ron & Don will be at the base of the Space Needle (on the circular drive off Broad St.) from 3p.m. to 7p.m.

Throughout "Arms Around Our Officers," Ron and Don will be expressing their feelings about the two brave officers who met with tragedy Saturday night, and about our appreciation for the job law enforcement does to preserve the very fabric of our society. Ron and Don invite you to express your feelings as well, and we've created a special email address to help you do so: armsaroundourofficers@973kiro.com.

We invite you to click on the email link (or copy and paste it) and compose a message for Officer Sweeney, the family of Officer Brenton, or both, and we will forward your message appropriately. In particular, if you can't join Ron and Don tomorrow between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Seattle Center for "Arms Around Our Officers," use this new email address to express your thoughts. We know your support is very much appreciated by Officer Sweeney, and it's essential for us to let the family of Officer Brenton know that he died a hero and that they are not alone.

If you'd like to make a donation to the "Brenton Family Assistance Fund," you can do so at any Bank of America branch location.

    Arms Around Our Officers
Dear Ron & Don, I wanted to respond to Ann who commented that if her husband was injured or killed at work he wouldn’t receive the media attention that SPD Officer Brenton has. I am sure she worries about her husband but I don’t think she understands what police officers and their families have to live with every day. My father is a retired cop and my husband is a cop. The families of police officers make a commitment to the community along with their loved one knowing that every day could be the last time they get to hold them. My heart goes out to the fallen officer’s family. I was not surprised that you are getting this kind of email. While working in the office at a police agency in Washington several years ago, one of our officers was shot and killed in the line of duty. The next morning our front desk received numerous phone calls telling us that they were happy another cop was killed. Our receptionist went home in tears that day and the rest of us were shocked at the callousness of those callers. Fortunately most of our citizens appreciate the fact that police officers go into work every day and do their very best to protect us all. Thank you for supporting them.

    The watch
You have to kinda fill in the blanks... The Watch For twenty years, This sailor has stood the watch While some of us were in our bunks at night, This sailor stood the watch While some of us were in school learning our trade, This shipmate stood the watch Yes...even before some of us were born into this world, This shipmate stood the watch In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history, This shipmate stood the watch Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there, Needing his guidance and help, Needing that hand to hold during those hard times, But he still stood the watch He stood the watch for twenty years, He stood the watch so that we, our families, And our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night, Knowing that a sailor stood the watch Today we are here to say: "Shipmate...the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those YOU have trained, guided, and lead Shipmate you stand relieved...we have the watch!" "Boatswain...Standby to pipe the side...Shipmate's going Ashore!" –William Whiting, 1860

    Since when
Is it acceptable to talk about someone getting what they deserved when death is involved? Hayseed, you don't have a clue. Life is precious, no one deserves to die for ticketing people for speeding or running a red light. Get a life. And to Mary4, I am sickened at hearing about the calls that your receptionist had to take. People don't seem to understand that despite the uniform, despite the official car, our police officers are people just like us with families and friends who care for them.

Hayseed, With a comment like that, I think that you should be on the list of suspects. 48 hours of questioning would do wonders for your attitude.

Hey, I feel bad as anyone else about the Police Officer that was killed over the weekend but cone on, enough is enough.... Getting shot is an occupational risk when you sign on as a cop. They know it when they sign up and they are handsomely rewarded for that risk. Taking into consideration salary and pensions, most of these guy's are paid millions by the time they finish their career. I know, My Brothers a cop. If an Electrician gets electrocuted to death on the job are you going to hold an "Arms around our Electricians" gathering? I didn't think so. You guy's are shamelessly using this guy's tragic death to promote your show. Pretty disgusting...

Your comment is a joke. Cops make millions? Seriously? Oh yeah median income is really being 'handsomely rewarded' as you put it. Also this guy was assassinated, its not like he busted in on a drug deal gone bad and got shot. Someone's sole purpose was to find a cop and kill him which is part of the reason this is being covered so much. The other part is that there is still a criminal or criminals out there who have done this and by keeping the story in the headlines it will help to bring this scum to justice. Comparing the job of a cop to an electrician is a joke. Ron and Don are using their show to try and do something good for the community and show support for our cops. They have a radio talk show, what do you want them to talk about? Something far less meaningful? You've got a bad attitude. A cop was murdered in cold blood and this is your response? Dude, get a clue.

    A third place for email
I think it is great that we have a way to send our support to Officer Brenton's family and to Officer Sweeney. I think it is so important to remember that the rest of the Seattle police force have also suffered a tremendous loss. I hope people remember to send support to them also.

    Hey cobain 501!
Median King county household income last year was 48k per year. Many of those housholds are two income earners. Average salary for a Seattle Police SGT is $74k per year. Multiply 74k time 30 years and its over 2 million dollars. I call that a handsome reward for the associated risk that these officers take. I feel bad for the loss of this Officer and especially bad for the family he leaves behind. However, I'm still not convinced that Public Servants deserve more homage than the average citizens that pay their salaries.

Median income for King County according to the US Census Bureau is $66,969 (in 2007, probably higher now) Here is the reference: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/53/53033.html I can't tell you what the average is, but the wage for city of Seattle officers ranges from $60,672 - $79,440 annually. Here is the reference for that : http://www.seattle.gov/police/jobs/benefits/salary.htm So bottom line is, cops make a relatively median income. Nobody is getting rich off becoming a cop.
