It's often said there are no atheists in foxholes, but their presence will certainly be felt on Metro buses soon.

Seattle atheists are putting up advertising placards inside downtown Metro buses for the months of November and December.

Mike Gillis with Seattle Atheists shared some of the messages that would be featured on the ads. "One of them by Thomas Jefferson, from one of his letters is that, 'Religions are all alike, founded upon fables and mythologies,' another by Ben Franklin, 'The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason."

Gillis says the ad campaign is designed to counter the common assumption that this country was founded as a Christian nation.

Will they allow pro religion signs too?
I'm not a person who subscribes to any faith, just one who loves freedom of expression. Will they be allowing signs either general or specific to a particular faith to be put up alongside these ones? If they deny the Catholic or Mormon church etc. to do so as these are "public transportation" vehicles (paid for with public dollars) then I think I have a problem with that.

    To what end?
I don't insist that Atheists or anyone else follow the path that I have chosen, why do they feel it's their duty to try to tell ME what to believe or not to believe? We'll all know what's true eventually! In the meantime why get your disbelieving panties in a bunch?

Buy why do this at the holidays.
This is really just mean spirited. Why do they care if people follow some religion. Religions usually try to convert people because they are concerned for their soul. Since Atheists dont believe that we have a soul, what do they care? Nothing more than poking Christians with a sharp stick. Why dont they come out with some ads that slam Muslims during Ramadan?

    They'll Cover Islam Too
Eid al-Adha is in late November so they should feel equally insulted as the Christians. BTW, If somebody is concerned for my soul they can do it from afar and not at my front door.

    Seems to me Dex
that if you pay, they will put any message you want on there. Metro gets advertising revenue for it.

Atheists are equal opportunity religion deniers
They aren't poking Christians with a stick any more than Hindus, Shintos, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Calvinists, Protestants, Baptists, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Wiccans, Satanists, etc. Atheists don't believe in _any_ god, doesn't matter whose flavor it is. It's just that Christians seem to think that their religion is more important any everyone else's so they are the first to complain when an atheist says "God who?". Don't confuse atheism with a religion. It's not one.

To be fair, the follower of any particular religion, or non-religion in the case of agnostics or atheists, think their religion is the best or "most important" religion. If they did not believe this way, they would surely move on to another religion. The misassumption that somehow Christians are more egocentric than any other group is getting old....

I have posted this many times but.... The 1st Amendment, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." It is supposed to keep believers and non-believers alike. Both should take care not to push to hard in either direction for should it be breached, one side will rule over the other. Be warned: Step on my 1st Amendment rights and you may find my fist touching your nose. Semper Vigilo Fortis Paratus et Fidelis

If there was a god, there'd be no foxholes.
