Scientists say dust is polluting Puget Sound

Researchers say dust in your home is polluting Puget Sound.
"We sampled dust, as well as the laundry rinse water from six different homes in Puget Sound. We found the chemicals phthalates, which are plasticizers and fragrance carriers, in the dust and the laundry water samples from each home," said Erika Schreder, with the Washington Toxics Coalition.
Scientists say chemicals found in consumer products become house dust.
"So they go from the product to your dust on your clothing, and then when you wash your clothes, into the sewage treatment and into Puget Sound," said Schreder.
Researchers, like Schreder, want the government to regulate the use of harmful chemicals in products such as toys, vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and many personal care products.
"We need Gov. Gregoire, we need the Legislature, and we need our state agencies to take leadership to figure out ,which chemicals are causing the greatest threat to Puget Sound," she said.
