Researchers say dust in your home is polluting Puget Sound.

"We sampled dust, as well as the laundry rinse water from six different homes in Puget Sound. We found the chemicals phthalates, which are plasticizers and fragrance carriers, in the dust and the laundry water samples from each home," said Erika Schreder, with the Washington Toxics Coalition.

Scientists say chemicals found in consumer products become house dust.

"So they go from the product to your dust on your clothing, and then when you wash your clothes, into the sewage treatment and into Puget Sound," said Schreder.

Researchers, like Schreder, want the government to regulate the use of harmful chemicals in products such as toys, vinyl flooring, shower curtains, and many personal care products.

"We need Gov. Gregoire, we need the Legislature, and we need our state agencies to take leadership to figure out ,which chemicals are causing the greatest threat to Puget Sound," she said.

WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE AND WITH THIS BS WHO WOULD WANT TO LIVE LONG ANYWAY. You could put all the dust in a plastic bag and send it to Edmonds. The sky is falling.

    Environmental goofballism
"Dust"? In Puget Sound? Oh, no!

Long before modern civilation lined the shores of Puget Sound, long before First Nations lived in scattered settlements along the banks, the wind blew. Everytime the wind blew, it carried some dust into Puget Sound.

The environmentalists need to pick their battles. Oil spills and petroleum pollution? Good cause. Untreated sewage? Good cause. Heavy metals in industrial discharge and stormwater runoff? Understandable cause. Dust? Gimme a break. A lot of environmentalists are well meaning and rational people- but others won't be satisfied until we all commit suicide and remove our foul human presence from the sanctity of Gaia.

The dust itself isn't the issue - it's whats IN the dust
Many people choose to use products that dont have these chemicals in them because they dont want the chemicals in their bodies and homes. From personal care products to dish and laundry soap you would not believe the crap they are allowed to put in there. It's like nobody ever thought that skin could absorb stuff like nasty chemicals. No surprise that these chemicals are ending up in all sorts of places like dust and greywater.

I remember reading not that long back that they were not sure how so many chemicals are still increasing in potency levels in our rivers and in the puget sound - big surprise that it's the crap that the big industries are producing for consumer products. My home is free of this crap - my dust is (relatively) safe and has been for years. I avoid that crap like the plague.

NO MORE GOVERNMENT... "We need Gov. Gregoire, we need the Legislature, and we need our state agencies to take leadership to figure out ,which chemicals are causing the greatest threat to Puget Sound," Are you for real? Seriously? Come on people... be American... THINK. We can solve problems on our own without "big brother" always interceding...

    TO Madison2Seattle:
While I'm sure you're a big time liberal and we probably wouldn't agree on much... I do respect your stand on toxic products. This is precisely my point in the previous comment. It was you, Joe America (or Joline perhaps, lol) that made the decision to NOT use that stuff... not big government.. you the informed american. This is what made America great and what will keep her great if we don't forget that!

    Dust
Are the wonderful reachers becoming bored? Was someone sitting there one day staring at the dusty coffee table thinking, "Someone should do something about that. Let's get rid of dust. Maybe if it is found to be harmful, we can outlaw it or tax it or something." They will probably start up a government program of Official Dusters who will have to suit up to officially clear your home of the unhealthful substance. There you are . . . . a new job creation program!!
