Seattle cracking down on jaywalkers

You look both ways before crossing the street, right? Do you ever look for a cop? You should, at least in downtown Seattle and Belltown.

The city has been running a series of jaywalking stings this year, and cops have been handing out $56 tickets.

The city is running the stings as part of the master plan to make Seattle safer and more walkable.

    Are you kidding me?!
What a joke! My mountain bike was stolen from my locked garage and the police wouldn't even bother to fingerprint the crappy bike the thief left behind, but they are going to set up stings and ticket people out trying to support Seattle's destroyed economy?! Hmm, what's next? Are they going to ticket you if you are having fun? Let's focus on the thugs dealing drugs or robbing people at gunpoint around here. Leave the law-abiding citizens alone!

    Red light runners too
How about we also start nailing drivers who run red lights and nearly hit pedestrians who have the right of way in crosswalks. I have lost count how many times at 4th and Stewart in downtown Seattle where drivers have run red lights.

    Don't forget
The bicyclists that blow through red lights and run through the crosswalks when people are in the crosswalk.

    Great Idea
I think this is a great idea. There are more and more people getting hit by cars each year in Seattle. For people to compare this to their bike being stolen is very sophmoric. No one is dead from your bicycle being jacked but people getting hit by cars from jaywalking can be deadly.

    I've Seen This...
Waiting for the bus at 3rd and Pike everyday, I have seen a motorcycle cop racing around giving jaywalking tickets. And I mean hauling a**. If you ask me, him SPEEDING up the street to issue a jaywalking ticket is far more dangerous than the guy who crossed the street after looking both ways and identified the fact that there were no cars within 200+ yards of him. This is a HUGE waste of taxpayer money and law enforcement man hours. (I witness drug deals happening daily on that same block! Surely this should be dealt with before some dude crossing the street at the "wrong time"!) I understand ticketing someone who disrupted the flow of traffic by jaywalking, but not the guy who crossed when there were no cars to be seen - that's just common sense. Enough with the "protect people from themselves" laws. Dumb.

You've got to be joking. Let me get this straight - because there are a select few MORONS who can't figure out when it is safe to cross the street, everyone else who CAN determine when it is safe should be "protected from themselves" with a $56 fine. That makes a lot of sense.
