A 53-year-old man and his 25-year-old son, accused of shooting a Rottweiler multiple times and leaving it to suffer, have been charged with first-degree animal cruelty.

Prosecutors say the men were trying to kill the dog because it had bitten the younger man's wife several times.

King County Animal Care and Control officers say the dog, Maynard, had been tied to a tree and left to suffer. It was found May 31 lying about 15 feet down a steep embankment off a road outside North Bend.

Animal Control officers said once it was found, the dog survived for four days after surgery but was paralyzed and eventually had to be euthanized.

The 4-year-old dog was taken to an animal shelter, where he was found to be partially paralyzed and in extreme pain. According to court papers filed Tuesday in King County Superior Court, the dog was euthanized.

Animal Control Interim Manager Nancy McKenney notes low- cost obedience classes and dog training options are available and animal owners can always surrender a dog to King County.

The Humane Society of the United States offered a $2500 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case. Pasado's Safe Haven added a $10,000 reward as well.

    WHAAAAAT?
Arrested? OK, they should have made sure it was dead. I wonder how long the bitten woman is going to suffer? Are the owners going to be arrested for that? Norwester

    Don't be an idiot
Norwester, there are many better and more humane ways to handle this. While they could have easily surrendered the animal to a rescue shelter, or if they really wanted this animal dead could have taken it to a local vet to be euthanized, these morons decided to SHOOT the thing (and not kill it)?? Usually people don't surrender or euthanize pets for monetary reasons or because they simply don't want to go through the hassle. They did a heinous thing in wounding the dog and leaving it to die alone in the woods when there were better choices available. That is what they should be charged, tried and convicted for.
