State audit rips apart King County
KIRO Radio
A review of King County's financial systems showed so many problems the state ended its audit. The county apparently couldn't provide the state with all of the files needed.
The State Auditor's Office noted several flaws. For example, there isn't a countywide system for tracking construction projects.
Spokeswoman Mindy Chambers with the state auditors office said stakeholders should be able to regularly check on progress of these projects, "They can go in and be sure these projects are on time, that these projects are on budget, that if there are delays that they know why."
The projects audited also went far over budget.
King County Metro also raised a red flag. "We always look when we do audits to see whether there's a potential or high risk for a loss of public funds and that was one area where there was a risk," said Chambers.
The report goes on to say the county should keep better
track of inventory in various departments from ammunition
at the Sheriff's Office to pharmaceuticals and computer
monitors. It also found that there is a high potential for
fraud.
