Teens find prom help at The Ruby Room
KIRO Radio
High school seniors who don't have enough money for prom are getting some help at The Ruby Room.
"We provide everything that a girl needs to go to a formal dance; the dress, purse, and accessories. They come in and shop for everything they need," said Nyla Bitterman, director of the non-profit boutique in Seattle.
The only difference is it's all free.
Bitterman says this year they're serving more teens than they did in 2008. "This year already we've given away about 350 dresses. That's a lot compared to last year. That's probably about 100 more than last year and we still have two more Saturdays to go."
Bitterman says the goal is to replicate the prom shopping experience. "We wanted it to be more of a place where you felt like you were shopping, you just weren't paying for anything," she said.
There are still two more prom fittings this season. Parents can contact the store for appointments.
Photo Note: Bitterman says they take in old dresses, like the one in the photo, and local designers refurbish them for The Ruby Room.
