Small rallies in favor of a national health care system took place across the country today.

Seattle's event was called "Shake it up for Single Payer," and was held outside the federal building Monday April 27th. The rally was organized by local belly dancers who say they often pay out of pocket for medical insurance.

"Largely, artists don't have health insurance because most people get their health insurance through their employers and artists work for themselves and so quite often it's difficult," said rally organizer and belly dancer Carolyn Stirling.

Currently, federal lawmakers are debating health care proposals. If approved it would guarantee health coverage. Critics of the plan call the proposal "socialized medicine."

    Surely...
Changing the game on health and medicine will have an enormous impact - The firmly entrenched might actually have to think about customers again. As it happens, change is the initiator of innovation, new markets, and so on. I am a professional and used to see very nice benefits - but that is not so true now; Jobs are volatile and everyone is looking for the cheaper, but marginal, deal. My pharmacy and copay costs have tripled and I have less coverage. Prices and true coverage are getting customer hostile. Insurers are borderline mercenary now. And some have always paid out of pocket - they pay a lot more even when they have less - because they also do not have anyone on their side. The fact is, decent healthcare can not be reserved for those lucky enough to work in the right fields. Healthcare workers do not typically have decent coverage - What's that about?! Everyone trying to turn this into socialism needs to face a simple truth... everyone does deserve medical care and tying health benefits to employment makes unemployment even more unhealthy. Medical coverage is necessary - just as is infrastructure maintenance. Many in this country are a paycheck or medical issue away from bankruptcy. And I would suggest most of us are exposed today. The people who cry out against this have another agenda... they are worried about themselves... or they have been sold a bill of goods. When few can afford healthcare and most have no coverage - we are exposed as a nation to the next pandemic - and to simple exposure from job losses, illnesses, and accidents. Most of those speaking against this are being manipulated unknowingly by the spin doctors/lobbyists/politicians and the organizations in place - but the fact is that they risk themselves along with all of us. Consistently available healthcare is just good risk management... Its a simple truth.
