He drives an electric car and once rode a bike to the Academy Awards. Actor Ed Begley Jr. was in Wallingford Wednesday night to talk about "green living."
Now Begley's mission is spreading eco-awareness in a new book, Living Like Ed. "It's a how-to book illustrating some ways people can save money and protect the environment. Kind of suggesting people do it exactly the way I did it in the 1970, which was to do it on the cheap. I didn't have a lot of money in 1970. I couldn't afford solar panels for 20 years from that point."
Begley now has his own reality show about green living, "Living Ed," which takes you into Begley's home where he applies his own tips. "Simple things like cleaning the coil on the back of your refrigerator where the refrigerant goes to make the inside of the box cold. That coil needs to be cleaned. People don't think of that. They don't think to replace their air filter. You ask somebody 'When did last replaced the air filter on your heating and air unit' and they say 'I don't remember.' Then you say 'It's definitely been too long.'"
Begley has been known as an environmentalist for decades and it all started in his childhood. "I was raised in a world of conservation because of my dad. He was a conservative who liked to conserve. He lived through the Depression and he was the son of Irish immigrants. He turned off lights, turned off the water, saved string, and saved tin foil. That's how I was raised."
You can find Ed's book at Not A Number store in Wallingford. He'll be at the Woodland Park Zoo Thursday night and on KIRO Radio's Ron and Don Show.
