South Lake Union growth concerns residents
KIRO Radio
A proposal to put more high rises in Seattle's South Lake Union is causing a stir among neighbors.
Residents are worried their neighborhood will become a slew of towers, blocking their current view of the water or the Space Needle.
One proposal calls for several high rises. "The idea of building a 3/4 mile long by 1/2 mile wide block of 300 to 400 foot towers, the Space Needle Corporation called it a wall of concrete," said Kevin McCarthy, Board Member with the Lake Union Opportunity Alliance.
Residents want to make sure their voice is heard in future development. "We're all for growth and density, more towards the downtown core, towards Denny, but at the end of the day we care more about liveability, walkability, and building what we call a 'neighborhood for neighbors,'" said McCarthy. He met with city leaders, but he's just not sure if the message sunk in. "The mayor was very nice to meet with us. He's a very calculating politician. He's going to take his time and deliberate the issues."
Others want to know, why Lake Union? Diane Masson, Board Member with the Lake Union Opportunity Alliance, says Belltown has already been zoned for high rises and has room for more. "Why are we rushing into developing the South Lake Union neighborhood? These other places aren't even built out yet," said Masson.
The city will narrow down proposals next month.
